Our Leadership

Carla brings global experience in strategy, growth, and finance to AES UK & Ireland. Under Carla’s leadership, her team is focused on building from the company’s strong foundation of traditional energy generation in Northern Ireland and bringing AES’ global expertise in new energy solutions, such as energy storage, to the UK & Ireland.

Prior to her current role, Carla most recently served as Vice President of the Corporate Strategy & Investment Group at the AES Corporation. In her role, Carla oversaw the company’s corporate strategy and global investment decisions. Previously, she served as Chief of Staff to AES’ COO of Utilities, focusing on business-level strategy, growth, and risk management for a portfolio of businesses in Latin America, United States, Europe and Africa. Carla’s prior positions at AES include Project Director, managing the financial restructuring of the company's Brazilian distribution businesses, and Director of Finance at the company's integrated utility in Cameroon.

Carla also worked at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) where she focused on financing and promoting sustainable energy investment throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Previously, Carla served as a project finance lender for ABB Structured Finance.

Carla holds an MBA from Columbia Business School, a MALD from the Fletcher School at Tufts University and a BA in International Relations and Economics from the University of Southern California. She sits on the Boards of CBI Northern Ireland and Business in the Community Northern Ireland, as well as several AES companies.

Carla is the recipient of the Belfast Homecoming 2015 'Belfast Business Ambassador' Award and the Institute of Directors Northern Ireland 'Director of the Year for Leadership in Corporate Responsibility' Award.

Carla Tully , , , President, AES UK & Ireland

With over 20 years experience in HR and eight years in Health, Safety and Security, Janice brings a wealth and variety of experience to AES. She is responsible for leading HR for AES across the UK & Ireland, and Jordan, ensuring the delivery of a comprehensive HR service to support evolving business needs.

Since joining AES in 2010 Janice has been instrumental in designing and implementing major change programmes across the UK businesses, including the restructuring and harmonisation of newly acquired plants and the centralisation of support functions. Janice designed and manages the successful ‘Europe Operations Development Programme’ and is part of the Global Engineering Competency Framework team.

Prior to joining AES through the Ballylumford acquisition in 2010, Janice worked for BG Group. Here she successfully integrated HR with Health and Safety to utilise resources and capitalise on synergies, as well as introducing a Behavioural Based Safety programme to address human factors in health and safety.

Janice is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Personnel and Development. She also holds a BSc Hons in Psychology (University of Ulster) and Post Graduate Qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety (Loughborough University) and Institute of Quality Assurance (University of Ulster). She has completed the AES Global Emerging Leaders Programme.

Janice Hagan , , , HR Business Partner, AES UK & Ireland and Jordan

Julie joined AES in 2011, after a number of years advising AES as external legal counsel. She is a qualified lawyer who is responsible for protecting AES’s legal interests, including ensuring compliance with the UK Bribery Act. Julie acts as Company Secretary to all the AES Northern Ireland companies and advises directors on their responsibilities. 

Prior to joining AES, Julie worked as a Senior Associate in the Corporate & Commercial Group in one of Ireland’s leading commercial law firms. In this role, Julie advised AES on the acquisition of AES Ballylumford Limited and was recognised in Chambers UK as an “Associate to Watch”.

Julie has a degree from the University of Warwick in Law & Business Studies and completed her professional qualifications at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies at Queen’s University Belfast. 

Julie Leeburn , , , Legal, Compliance & Communications Director, AES UK & Ireland

Ian brings 25 years of experience within the energy sector to his role as AES Commercial Director for the UK & Ireland market. He joined AES in 2009 as the Commercial Manager responsible for developing and executing AES’ commercial strategy for its assets in Northern Ireland. He moved to his current position in 2013 and is responsible for leading the execution of AES’ commercial strategy in UK and Ireland, including strategic engagement with stakeholders and supporting growth activities.

Prior to joining AES Ian held numerous positions over 20 years within Viridian and Northern Ireland Electricity.

He is on the Board of a number of AES companies including AES Ballylumford Ltd and AES Kilroot Power Ltd, and is a Board Member of the Electricity Association of Ireland.

He holds an Electrical Engineering degree and Masters degree in Manufacturing, Design and Management both from Queen’s University Belfast and is a Member of the UK’s Institute of Directors.

Ian Luney , , , Commercial Director, AES UK & Ireland

Tim is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of AES UK and Ireland’s generation facilities. He is responsible for driving innovation into everyday processes at the plants and utilising AES’ generating assets to their maximum potential to support security of supply for the All Island electricity market.
Tim has worked in the electricity industry for over 30 years. He held the position of Plant Manager at the Belfast West plant until 2002 and also worked within AES European businesses including as Plant Manager of the AES Ottana facility in Italy. At AES Kilroot he worked on the FGD emissions abatement development and for several years as the Engineering Manager with the maintenance and engineering teams. His most recent role as Outage & Project Manager of AES UK & Ireland included management of the UK Wind Operations prior to their sale in 2015.
Tim holds a BSc. in Mechanical Engineering from Queens University, Belfast and brings a wealth of technical knowledge and management experience to his new role as Complex Lead UK & Ireland.

Tim McCullough , , , Operations Director, AES UK & Ireland

Mark is responsible for leading AES UK & Ireland’s growth activities through a combination of business development and Mergers & Acquisitions. His team works across our market to expand and enhance AES’ existing platforms.

Since joining AES in 1992, Mark has led and closed numerous transactions across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Most recently he led the successful acquisition of the 1200MW Ballylumford Power Station in Northern Ireland, the sale of the 1200MW Cartagena power station in Spain and the development of the 250MW IPP4 project in Jordan.

Before joining AES Mark worked in a variety of roles within the generation division of Northern Ireland Electric.

Mark holds a mechanical engineering degree from Queen’s University Belfast and an MBA from the University of Ulster. He sits on various company boards for AES in the UK.
