Kilroot Advancion® Energy Storage Array

The Kilroot Advancion® Energy Storage Array is The AES Corporation’s first advanced, battery-based energy storage facility in the United Kingdom, and the first transmission grid scale array in the UK. The array provides 10 MW of interconnected energy storage, equivalent to 20 MW of flexible resource. The array began operations on 5th January 2016.

The Kilroot array helps balance supply and demand and supports the All Island transmission grid via System Operator Northern Ireland (SONI). The Advancion array also enhances power supply, enables more efficient dispatch of existing generation assets, and increases the ability to integrate renewable power sources.

AES secured Innovate UK Energy Catalyst funding in partnership with Queen’s University Belfast. The array will demonstrate the full capabilities of energy storage, led by a consortium including AES, Queen’s University Belfast, SONI, Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) and the Utility Regulator.

100 MW Second Phase

The 10 MW installation is a crucial first step towards a planned 100 MW energy storage array adjacent to Kilroot Power Station, which would be the largest in Europe.

The 100 MW installation, equivalent to 200 MW of flexible resource, has been independently estimated as being able to provide £8.5 million in system savings per annum and the equivalent of 123,000 tonnes of CO2 each year, by displacing out of merit thermal back up plant and facilitating fuller integration of existing renewables.
